The Dos and Donts of Driving New Year’s Eve in Texas

fireworks 300x225 The Dos and Donts of Driving New Years Eve in TexasDrunk driving is on the rise and with Thursday night being one of the biggest party nights of the year across the U.S. and other countries, you know it will happen in Texas, too. This is a wonderful state but when people are intoxicated, no matter what side of the Red River, the Rio Grande, the state line or the border they are on, they do make dumb mistakes. So what are the dos and don’ts of driving in Texas on New Year’s Eve?

Don’t be out too late. There may very well be someone driving down that same highway or residential road or city street who made the wrong decision. About a mile down the road is a state trooper who is sure to pull him over but in the meantime, make sure you are not out too late so you don’t cross that intoxicated driver’s path.

Do act responsibly. If you are going out clubbing or to a party and you need to get home, hire a cab or set up a designated driver who will not be drinking under any circumstances. Sure, everyone may need to pitch in and buy the designated driver a special thank you dinner or gift, but you can be sure it is worth it in the long run.

Don’t expect to be going home that evening. If you are drinking and you are stopped by an officer, the first offense is a Class B misdemeanor but you will undoubtedly spend the night in the slammer as 72 hours is the minimum jail time. Not to mention bonding out and facing legal fees. If it is your second, be prepared for a longer jail term and probation and if it is your third? Don’t mess with Texas..you are going to prison with a felony charge.

Do plan on attending a non-alcoholic event or hosting one at home if you already have a problem with alcohol. You are celebrating a new year so do so in style. Make sure you are around to enjoy the new year. Your family, your friends, and not the least of all YOU, are worth it.

Don’t buy alcohol for underage teens. You make think it is harmless and that they are all going to stay put but just like adults, teens do not think all that rationally when they are intoxicated. An argument could break out, a parent could call, a friend might need a ride; anything could happen and before you know it, teens are out on the road drinking and driving and possibly setting themselves up for a life-changing situation.

Do have a good time and enjoy yourselves. You live in a great state. It has been a rough economic time of late but look towards the new year with hope and optimism. Just make sure you are here to enjoy what is coming in the New Year by being responsible Thursday night.

Happy New Year, Texans!!!! Happy New Year, World!!

Make a Texas-size Resolution

This week we are concentrating on hope and resolutions. The new year brings both. Every year during the holidays people succumb to depression and drug and alcohol use increase tremendously in the state of Texas. Whether you are a vet who has returned from combat, a teen who gave in to peer pressure, a lonely, single mom or a depressed and stressed out husband and father, you have come to realiztexas flag 300x225 Make a Texas size Resolutione that drug and alcohol addiction do not just affect the poor and homeless.

But you can overcome it. You can take that spirit that your ancestors had when they fought for the Alamo, when we had our wake up all that all men created equal meant everyone regardless of race or gender, when we stepped up as a nation when Pearl Harbor was attacked and on 9-11. Just as our country fought battles before, so too, does a person fight a battle when he or she is trying to overcome drugs.

The wonderful thing about it, just as in battles of wars past and present is, you do not have to do it alone. There are wonderful drug and alcohol treatment programs in the state of Texas that will help you. All you have to do is fill out the form to the right and someone will immediately address your request. Why? Not even just because this is Texas, but because you are a worthy and deserving person. YES, you ARE.

Drug and alcohol treatment programs are successfully helping people in Texas, across the U.S., in Canada and other countries as well. Life is worth living, life is worth saving and yours is just as important as the next person’s. So get a hold of that Texas spirit within you, get that Texas pride and stubbornness out and on the table. Show yourself that you are worth it, that your family is worth it, as they are in the depths of addiction right alongside you.

Does that sound optimistic? Does it sound like a dream come true? The wonderful part is, it really can and will come true if you take that all important step and make the request for help. Whether it is for you or a loved one, the new year can begin with a fresh start for your family. Make it your new year’s resolution to start the year off by winning the battle against your addiction. You can do it. I have faith that you can and so do those who care about you.   Make a Texas-sized resolution and start your new life today.

Make Mature Decisions this New Year’s Eve

Photoxpress 5142841 300x200 Make Mature Decisions this New Years EveChristmas has just passed and New Year’s Eve is coming soon, a time of resolutions, celebrating and partying. North Texas will not soon forget the Christmas Blizzard of 2009 nor will the many travelers who were and are still stranded here.

With that in mind, the holidays and celebrations still go hand in hand, especially when you have college students in from campuses around the country. So what does a parent do when an adult child wants to go do his own thing? I mean, it is understandable that if someone is 21 and maintaining As and Bs in college that he is mature enough to make other decisions, right?

We make a compromise. He wants to hang out with old high school friends and that is understandable. Yet, the roads are treacherous and Mom is being over-protective. So after a minor disagreement we do a little texting back and forth.

I love you and I trust your friends. It is the road conditions I don’t trust. We are not used to this weather.

He texts me back and says that everyone is going to stay the night at his buddy’s house just a few blocks from us instead of anyone getting out with the temperature dropping to below freezing again. That was all I needed. These find young men showed maturity and I was proud of all of them.

However, some people do not always show maturity. Even without weather playing a part, people get out after imbibing in alcohol and make an intoxicated decision that changes everything forever if it leads to a fatality or injury. One decision made under the influence can ruin a life forever. It is not a dramatic statement, it is the truth.

Whatever your New Year’s traditions are, make sure that common sense, maturity and responsibility play a part. While drug and alcohol addiction are on the rise, this particular post is addressed to those who do not see themselves as having a problem. If you do not have one, great. Those who do can tell you how lucky you are. But that does not mean you are perfect and drunk driving accidents occur all the time and the intoxicated driver is not always someone who is an alcoholic.

If you go out to a club, have a designated driver. If you are having a party at home, consider making it an overnight stay. A little bit of discomfort for one night is nothing compared to an irresponsible decision that can cause injury or death. Besides, you want to be able to take part in all the good things 2010 has to offer, don’t you? I know I do.

Happy New Year, Everyone!!

Cheers to Santa and Merry Christmas

drinks 300x211 Cheers to Santa and Merry Christmas It is Christmas Eve. Snow and ice abound all over north Texas and could possibly extend to other areas. People are in a holiday mode and well they should be. No matter what our religious beliefs, most everyone agrees that this is a family time of year.

So as we lift our glasses of eggnog to Santa, let us be careful not to overindulge in spirits this year. In Texas we are not all familiar with driving on icy and snow covered roads. It is bad enough that accidents happen normally, do not overindulge in alcohol this evening and have a heartbreaking memory tied to Christmas forever for your loved ones.

As conditions change in north Texas from winter advisories to blizzard conditions, we realize and respect that those north of us are more experienced in these road conditions. Pull up a couch or an air mattress, stay together and enjoy the beauty of a rare sight in our great state, a white Christmas. Cuddling together around the Christmas tree, watching Christmas classics on television, playing board games together. All of these entail making new Christmas memories for the children to remember, adult siblings can bond again and grandparents may be having a last Christmas depending on age.

A memory no one wants at this time of year is imbibing too much in the alcoholic spirits and then driving somewhere, losing control of the vehicle and causing injury or a fatality to oneself or an innocent victim. So if we want to party and give a toast to Santa, let’s show responsibility to our children and respect to our family members; stay inside.

The greatest Christmas memories are filled with children and grandchildren excitedly opening presents on Christmas Eve and Christmas morning. College students have returned home, family members have driven in from across town or long distances just to be together for the holidays. Eggnog and coffee, tea or soft drinks can make for the best beverages as families enjoy the camaraderie of just being together.

So as you lift up a toast to family, to being together, to Santa and to many more Christmases to come, remember that just saying no tonight is going to be the greatest present your family may not even realize it is giving to each other.

Merry Christmas, Texas, and Merry Christmas to all who stop by to read. May you have many more wonderful ones to come!
