The Ultimate Mother’s Day Gift

family 300x200 The Ultimate Mothers Day Gift Easter just passed and everyone knows what comes next, Mother’s Day, then Father’s Day. Two very special days set aside to acknowledge our parents. Whether you are a mom or have a mom, if drug addiction or alcoholism is affecting your family, this is the perfect time to give, well, the perfect gift.

If you have a problem, get help. Seek treatment in a Texas rehab program. Imagine this, going to your mother and admitting you have a problem and that you want to get help now. It would be the ultimate Mother’s Day gift. She has likely prayed and begged you time and again to get help. She isn’t doing it to nag. She does it because she loves you.

Now, on the other hand, are you a mother with a drug or alcohol problem? Make a promise to be there for years to come for your children by seeking help now. Give your children one of the greatest lessons you can: that it is not shameful to seek help and that you and they are worth getting that help for.

Whether you are a young man who saw combat in a war zone, a college student or high school student, you have a mother who loves you and wants nothing in life except your happiness. Whether you are a parent yourself, or a free and easy going single young person, or even someone older and supposedly more mature in your 30s, 40s or 50s, if you have a drug or alcohol problem, get help.

A card is lovely, a gift is nice, a trip to the casino is fun but honestly? No mother would take any of those over the possibility that her child, no matter his or her age, is getting help for a substance abuse problem.

This sounds like a good idea but you are not sure just where to start? Call the toll free number you see on this site. We can help you help yourself. Or email us and we will quickly respond. Texas has some wonderful rehab programs and we are here to help you find one and get your treatment started.

This Mother’s Day, show her how much you love her. Acknowledge you need help and get it. Your mother will always love you, and by getting help, you are showing her that you want to make many more wonderful memories together. I promise you, it is the ultimate Mother’s Day gift. Just ask your mom.

Dual Diagnosis Working in Dallas County

photo 5505 20090331 300x206 Dual Diagnosis Working in Dallas CountyBipolar disorder is one of the most severe forms of mental illness. While it can be a genetically factored disease, it is often also found hand in hand with alcoholism or drug addiction. A probation program in Dallas County specifically looks at the dual diagnosis of addiction and bipolar disorder and treats them together in order to help more people to successfully rehabilitate.

Honesty and accountability are required of the ones on probation. Properly treating the dual diagnosis of bipolar disorder and addiction are required of the program. Together they can build something remarkable: a second chance.

If a person is treated just for bipolar disorder or another mental illness but not for an addiction, chances are he or she is going to relapse quickly. If a person is treated for the addiction but not for the illness, same thing. Neither can successfully be treated if they are not both treated. Sort of a catch 22. Some probation programs recognize this and are working towards heading off problems associated with treating only part of such a situation.

It stands to reason that if a person can get disability for depression and bipolar disorder, then it needs to be recognized in the judicial system and the drug addiction cycle as well. This is where the dual diagnosis treatment comes in. It encourages honesty and accountability in those that the judicial system is giving a second chance to. It also aids in successful rehabilitation, having more people cleaner longer and less people relapsing and getting into more legal trouble.

Check to see if your county has a dual diagnosis probation program for mental illness and addiction. If it does, great. If not, bring it to the attention of those who should know. Let them know that the probation program in Dallas County seems to be having positive effects with it. It would be nice if every county in every state could eventually work this way. Treating both problems could end the addiction one altogether.

Dallas County is showing a good success rate. Two thirds more participants are graduating successfully than not. More are in the program and both the judicial system and the participants are finding it is showing a good rapport between success and accountability. Follow through has been successful for the most part as well, with clean drug tests. This helps participants maintain employment and encourages artistic endeavors as well, such as writing essays. All in all, dual diagnosis seems to be a positive program in the probation system.

Intervention: Reality Tv That is For Real

intervantion 300x200 Intervention: Reality Tv That is For RealSome reality shows are all about hoping someone messes up or hoping someone gets picked for romance. Some are about money, striving to be the last one on an island or in a house full of different personalities. Once in a while, a show comes along that actually teaches us about a problem or situation that affects families, friends and society as a whole. Intervention on A & E is one such show.

Now in its eighth season, the show reveals that an intervention is a process in which people at the lowest levels in their lives due to the control of drug or alcohol addiction in their lives are offered hope. Sometimes we can not see what is right before our eyes until it is too late. An intervention is the final step that many families and loved ones take.

What exactly is an intervention? A time when everyone comes together, not to persecute the addict, but to open his or her eyes to what is really going on, what he is doing to himself and to his loved ones. With trained professionals on hand, an intervention is highly likely to be quite emotional before ending (hopefully) on the note that the addict recognizes he or she does need help.

As with all television, there are the rating hopefuls. Pain sells, scandal sells. Still, if the end result is that someone is really and truly getting help, then a show such as Intervention may very well be the best reality show out there.

Intervention offers hope. It shows viewers who may very well be going through the same thing that there is a way out of the swamp of drug addiction. It may be a reality show but the truth is, this particular reality show will hit home with people who will say to themselves “that’s my family” or “that is exactly what we are going through”.

Since its premiere in 2005, Intervention has built up an audience that is not only a fan base but continues discussion afterwards online, where some people confess it has helped in their own family situations. Being able to acknowledge it, to admit there is a problem in one’s family with drug or alcohol addiction, is the first step. Intervention is a reality show that actually helps people instead of just building ratings. In the end, isn’t that what it is all about?

Even Football Players Can Get the Jailhouse Blues

football gear Even Football Players Can Get the Jailhouse BluesCelebrity scandals happen all the time. Whether movie stars, talented musicians, or awesome sports figures, their arrests make the news sometimes even before they are given their free phone call.  We see them highlighted in news segments, entire shows are dedicated to them and articles such as this one are written about them. Here in Texas, many of us fall into that same wishing well: “if someone else has it bad, especially a celebrity, then that means my life and my mistakes are not so bad.” Maybe we do not phrase it just that way but the truth is, scandal sells no matter what state you are in. Did you know that there were at least four celebrity drug busts in Texas in 2009? All were former professional football players.

Quincy Carter, the former quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, was released after just three years due to unknown reasons, although rumor had it that he failed a drug test. His problems with marijuana did come out after he was signed by the New York Jets and in February, 2009, he was arrested in south Texas for a DWI and for having marijuana, which seems to give the drug problem rumors merit.

Another former Dallas Cowboys’ player, receiver Terry Glenn, was arrested in Irving in January, 2009, for public intoxication and possession of marijuana. Another promising career cut short by drug addiction?

The Dallas Cowboys is not the only team to have drug addiction problems, as Roderick Green proved with his arrest in his hometown of Brentham, Texas. The former Baltimore Raven/SF 49er was arrested in February last year after a routine traffic stop for speeding led to charges of possession of marijuana as well as four other charges.

Former Jaguars wide receiver Reggie Williams was arrested in Houston last February for DUI and possessing marijuana. Another night partying that ended with a traffic stop, a failed sobriety test and the finding of illicit drugs.  All four were talented football players, all four fell under the control of drug addiction and alcohol.

In Texas, it does not matter if you are a celebrity, a regular working guy, a soccer mom,  a professional football player, or a political big wig.  In Texas, you do not drink and drive and you do not get caught with drugs, because even football players can get the jailhouse blues here.  An autograph and a great arm are not going to help you out with that.
